How to spend Earth Hour in Waterloo

apartments for rent in Waterloo, green living, Earth Hour, Waterloo Apartments, Apartments Waterloo, Apartments for Rent in Waterloo, Waterloo apartment rentals, Apartments in Waterloo, Apartment rentals in Waterloo, Waterloo Apartments for RentIn 2007, Earth Hour was launched as part of a campaign to raise awareness about global issues and create a sustainable world. The global community was tasked with sacrificing one hour of electricity. In the first year alone, more than 2.2 million people made the pledge and turned off their lights for 60 minutes. On March 28 from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., people around the world will participate in Earth Hour 2015. To keep residents of the Pinegrove Apartments occupied during their hour of darkness, our preferred property management company, Williams and McDaniel, has put together a few ideas and events that are running around Waterloo.

Gaze at the Stars or Go for a Walk

You’ll be able to catch a glimpse of the gorgeous nighttime stars once all the lights from homes, stores and buildings are turned off. Do a little astronomy research, grab your binoculars and go stargazing with a group of friends or your family. If stargazing doesn’t appeal to you, simply go for a walk around the neighbourhood. Make sure to wear reflective clothing and give the kids some glow sticks for added fun.

Scavenger Hunt

If you would prefer to stay in your house, set up an “energy-saving” scavenger hunt for the kids. Mark off areas in your apartment where energy can be saved and slightly reduced. This will keep the kids entertained and give them a good idea of how their energy-saving actions can make a difference and reduce their impact.

Join a Community Celebration

Learn about Earth Hour 2015 events happening in Waterloo or post your own plans and activities on Timescape.com. For additional information about events in the neighbouring area, visit EarthHourCanada.org.

Prepare a No-Cook Meal

Prepare a no-cook meal in advance using local ingredients you already have in your fridge. This will ensure your tummy isn’t grumbling during Earth Hour. Serve your meal by candlelight and follow it up with some board games.

Host a Games Night

Look at Earth Hour as an opportunity to unplug and catch up with neighbours, friends and family. Host a candlelit games night or casual hang out with people you haven’t seen in a while

Shut off the lights and celebrate Earth Hour this year by enjoying and participating in some fun and unconventional activities. You’l be having so much fun that you’ll forget that Earth Hour is only one hour. Located at 145 Lucan Avenue, Williams and McDaniel’s Pinegrove Apartments offer residents an ideal rental option located a short distance from an assortment of amenities.

To give Newport Towers Apartments residents some guidance about the health benefits of walking, step-tracking tools and local walking programs in Waterloo, our preferred property management company, Williams and McDaniel, has put together an introduction to walking for your health.

Save On Gym Costs

Stretching your legs during a relaxing stroll or a more brisk power walk can save you on the monthly or annual cost of a gym membership. It is important to get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise every week and to aim for 10,000 steps per day. To keep track of your steps, you can download a variety of apps and programs, including Step Counter, Free Pedometer & Step Counter and Runtastic Pedometer.

Disease and Condition Prevention

Increase Energy and Alertness

A brisk walk is an easy, natural way to boost energy levels by increasing oxygen supply cells in the body and boosting circulation. Take time during the workday to step away from your desk and enjoy a mid-afternoon walk. Being active can have both a positive and protective effect on the brain’s processing power. Maintaining an active lifestyle and regular exercise has the potential to reduce the risk of dementia and increase blood flow to the brain.

Reduces Risk of Stroke and Strengthen Heart

Regular walking for just 30 minutes, five days a week has been shown to significantly lower the risk of heart disease and stroke. Walking lowers the levels of bad cholesterol (LDL), increases the levels of good cholesterol (HDL) and keeps blood pressure within a normal range.

Osteoporosis

Walking helps strengthen and stimulate bones and their density. Avoid fragile bones and conditions like arthritis in the future by maintaining and promoting healthy joints and movement.

Cancer

Research has shown that regular walking can reduce the risk of breast, bowel and other cancers by a significant rate.

Mood Booster

Studies have shown that moderate-intensity exercises, which release “feel-good endorphins,” can be just as effective as antidepressants in some cases. Walking can be done both alone or with a group as a social activity that is relaxing and healthy.

Walk On Strong Program

Waterloo’s Walk On Strong Program is devoted to getting people walking. Walks, which range in length from 5KM to 14KM, are held every Tuesday night and Saturday morning and are free of charge. The walks are suitable for almost everybody and instruction is available if you’re interested. The 5KM walking group meets in the Waterloo Public Square near the mall’s main entrance at 6:30 p.m. every Tuesday all year long. The 14KM walking group meets in the Waterloo Public Square at 8:00 a.m. every Saturday and the 6KM walking group meets on Saturdays at 9:00 a.m. Located at 75 King Street South, Waterloo Public Square is a 13-minute drive and 32-minute transit commute from the Newport Towers Apartments.

Easy ways to hang any piece of art

Man Hanging FrameWall accents are subtle way to add a personalized touch to your Waterloo apartment. While you might think that setting up and hanging home décor is a daunting task, it can be easier than you think. To help residents of the Pinegrove Apartments display their pieces with ease, our preferred property management company, Williams and McDaniel, has put together some alternative hanging methods and helpful techniques to try out.

Decorative Ribbon & Vintage Hooks

If you’re interesting in hanging up lighter, more delicate items, ribbons are a great method. You can also match the colour of the item you’re hanging with the ribbon to achieve a more disguised means of displaying. There are even times when the hanging mechanism(s) used, such as hooks, can be incorporated into the display. Put those vintage hooks to good use and incorporate them into a visually appealing accent. For those who don’t have vintage hooks on hand, Home Depot has an impressive selection of faux vintage hooks that will proudly display your pieces of art. Located at 600 King Street North, the store is a 12-minute drive and 33-minute transit ride from the Pinegrove Apartments.

Disc Hangers

Disc hangers were originally intended to display plates, but they can also be used to display other items. This option works especially well on wood items, trays and any other objects that have a clean, smooth surface. Different hanger sizes are available for purchase at Michaels and are built to accommodate and support different weights. Simply wet the back of the disc, wait a few minutes and apply it to the back of the item. These hangers are also a great option for those who love to update their walls every so often as they can be easily removed and reused. The craft store at 50 Westmount Road North is a seven-minute drive and 25-minute transit commute from the Waterloo Apartments.

3M Command Hooks

Hang your works of art without damaging walls by taking advantage of 3M Command’s inventive products. Some of their products feature Velcro to secure items to walls or other smooth surfaces and others use double-sided adhesive to ensure a strong hold. Be sure to check the packaging on the hooks, hangers and adhesives to see how much weight they can hold and what items they are best suited for. 3M Products are ideal for renters since they leave no marks behind when removed and make hanging art a fuss-free task.

Framed Picture

Despite the presence of hanging alternatives, many individuals remain loyal to the traditional process involving a tape measure, wire, nails and a hammer. All of these supplies are available at Canadian Tire located at 400 Weber Street North, which is a seven-minute drive and 24-minute walk from the apartments. The BrightNest blog outlines the proper method involved when hanging a framed picture. Before you start hammering make sure that the picture is positioned how you want it and level. Use a piece of chalk or a digital level like iHandy, which is compatible with Apple and Android products, to ensure that the frame is exactly where you want it to be.

With these smart tips in hand, you’ll be motivated to start decorating and redecorating your apartment’s walls. Located at 145 Lucan Avenue, Williams and McDaniel’s Pinegrove Apartments offer residents an option that is conveniently surrounded by grocery stores, restaurants and a variety of other amenities.

Planning the perfect summer picnic in Waterloo

Waterloo Apartments, Apartments Waterloo, Apartments for Rent in Waterloo, Waterloo apartment rentals, Apartments in Waterloo, Apartment rentals in Waterloo, Waterloo Apartments for RentA great way to enjoy the summer heat, the company of family and friends and to get out of your Waterloo Apartment is by planning a picnic. It doesn’t matter if you’re eating, playing or catching up with people you haven’t seen in a while, picnics are always a good time. Sometimes planning and preparing for a picnic can be hard work, but with proper planning and ideas about what activities and recipes you’ll be serving can make things easier. If you’re looking to plan the perfect picnic this summer, our preferred property management company, Williams and McDaniel, has put together some tips, activities, recipes and even locations in the Waterloo area where Pinegrove Apartment residents can enjoy a relaxing sun-filled day with family, friends and great food.

Simplify Your Food Selection
Avoid frustration and reduce the amount of food preparation you have to do by choosing foods everyone likes. Finger foods, like sandwiches, wraps, veggies and dips are not only easier to eat, but they will also reduce the amount of dishes you’ll need to do later on. The ‘Cooking Light’ blog has a Top-Rated Picnic Recipes article that includes mouthwatering options like summer crab rolls, grilled veggie and hummus wraps and classic fudge-walnut brownies. You might feel obligated to prepare all the dishes by hand, however, ready-made items from the local bakery and deli can save you when you’re in a time crunch. Located at 760 King West, the Central Fresh Market is a three-minute drive and 16-minute walk from the Waterloo Apartments.

Organize In Advance
Spend more time enjoying the picnic and your guests and less time stressing by planning as much as you can in advance. Make a list of everything you need for the day of the picnic and keep this list in plain sight, like on a fridge or bulletin board. As you pack or purchase these items check them off the list. Keep the kids occupied while the food is being prepared by planning games and activities for them to participate in. The ‘Parents.com’ blog has compiled a list of 6 Olympic Party Idea including Ping-Pong Precision Pitch, Synchronized Snack Toss and Freestyle Shake-a-thon, which are sure to keep them entertained. Pack up all the ingredients you need and head to Waterloo Park located at 50 Young Street West, which is a five-minute drive and 21-minute walk from the Pinegrove Apartments.

Remember Your Picnic Essentials
Whether it’s buns for the hot dogs, Cheetos for one of the game activities or plates and forks, having the proper ingredients will make your picnic gathering run as smoothly as ever. For your non-perishable food items use durable tote bags or weaved picnic baskets, but for items that need to be kept cold coolers or ice chests are the ideal choice. Be prepared for clean up by purchasing large garbage bags, soap and sponges and bringing them with you to the picnic site. The Elora Gorge Conservation Area features a multiuse picnic area with garbage containers and a recycling depot right on site. Located at 7400 Wellington Road 21, the Gorge is a 29-minute drive from the Waterloo apartments and offers visitors a beautiful, natural area to spend their afternoon.

Pack and Serve With Ease
By taking care when packing away your picnic goodies, you can ensure everything arrives to your destination undamaged. For softer foods that can be easily damaged, like cakes, fruits and chips, it is best to place them in Tupperware containers with lids. To keep things organized and to avoid digging through coolers and tote bags, pack food away in the order it will be eaten. The first courses should go high on top, while the last courses should be on the bottom. It is also a good idea to pre-chop and slice burger toppings or salad ingredients in advance. Take advantage of Sobeys’s in-store bakery for fresh snacks and desserts. Located at 94 Bridgeport Road East, the store is a three-minute drive and 13-minute walk from the apartments. If you’re looking for a picnic destination, Rattlesnake Point Conservation Area located at 7200 Appleby Line has five breathtaking lookout spots and areas perfect for picnicking. The Pinegrove Apartments are a 46-minute drive from the conservation area.

No-Fuss Food Safety
Transporting food can sometimes be tricky and anything that needs to be kept cold or hot should remain that way for the duration of your travel time. It is important that you never transport partially cooked food, as bacteria can develop and compromise the food. It should be either fully cooked or cooked at the picnic site.  For all those last-minute ingredients, drop by Vincenzo’s located at 150 Caroline Street South and pick up whatever else you need. The apartments are a three-minute drive and 12-minute walk from the store.
